A Parent's Guide to the Grading Pocess
GRADING DAY INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
What happens after Registration Day?
Actual Grading Day
Things to remember!
- A number of grading days are held in pre-season time to determine player ability and ultimately team combinations. The following is a guide to all parents/players.
- Every player will be graded from 10 years to seniors. It is the expectation of the club and the appointed coach is that your daughter will be able to train with her team on an afternoon as decided by the coach. If this clashes with other family commitments then your daughter may have to be transferred to another team that trains on a different afternoon.
- If you join Corrimal Netball Club you do so accepting that girls of similar ability will be placed in our teams. We GRADE ALL TEAMS except NetSetGO! Where possible we keep friends together IF they request it, but ONLY if they are of similar ability.
What happens after Registration Day?
- After registration, registrations are sorted into age groups - NetSetGO (8-9yrs), Juniors (10-12yrs), Inters (13-14 yrs), Cadets (15-17yrs) and Seniors (18+).
- Age groups are sorted into playing positions and preliminary team requests are noted.
- The Club Coaching Coordinator and Registrar collate coach end of season ‘individual player profiles’. This summary is used to assist selectors at grading day.
- Draft games lists are prepared and those who have advised non attendance at grading are noted on master lists.
- We do not pre-grade any player during the previous netball season. We DO use prior knowledge of the player to grade should she be unable to attend grading days.
- There are NO pre determined junior, intermediate, cadet or senior teams and this is why it is important to attend grading days. Grading allows new members the opportunity to be in more highly ranked teams and allows existing members a chance to improve every year. This is why being at grading day is important. If you’re child doesn’t attend grading then skill improvement from season to season can’t be assessed and she will be graded based on the previous years performance.
Actual Grading Day
- Players marked off a master list compiled from rego. If your daughter’s name isn’t read out make sure you advise the selectors.
- When ranking a player, selectors take into consideration footwork, speed, agility, ball handling, court spatial awareness, height, general court play and positional expertise/flexibility. Selectors also look at natural ability/potential - if your daughter hasn’t played before but has picked up the basic skills quickly, she may still be considered for higher grades.
- On grading days each girl will have at least 3 games and will play in her preferred position at least twice. If your daughter hasn’t taken the court 3 times at grading day please bring this to our attention ON THE DAY!
- Each player in every game is ranked 1 - 4 (1 being the higher rank). They may be awarded different ranks from different selectors in different games in different positions. Overall, an average rank is attained and that player is then listed with their rank and court position on a master list in the appropriate age category.
- Selectors are permitted to ‘grade’ an age group where they have a daughter trialling, but will not take part in determining the final team compositions of that same age group.
- After grading the committee uses the ranking system and the coach player profiles to collate teams. This is the time when special requests are noted and friends put in teams if they match in ability.
- The Coaching Coordinator prepares draft teams in all age groups. The committee/selectors then meet and revises the draft teams. Teams are not finalised until the committee/selectors are happy that each team has a fair and even mix of ability, height and position.
- Each parent is emailed a team list. Some teams may not have a coach initially, but should have one eventually. Finding coaches for every team is a challenge EVERY year. We prioritise coaches to our nettas, juniors and intermediate teams.
Things to remember!
- The Committee are always open to constructive suggestions.
- The Committee welcomes parents who are interested in learning the skills of selecting, coaching, managing or umpiring – you will get plenty support from experienced coaches and umpires.
- Corrimal’s coaches, administrators and umpires are all volunteers. We require your support because we are after all, working to make YOUR daughter’s netball experience a pleasurable one.
- All volunteers need and appreciate encouragement. Coaches do their best for the team regardless of their experience and as such we should acknowledge their commitment.
- It is Corrimal NC expectation that each team will have a team ‘Manager’ to assist the coach. One or more parents/carers should be self appointed and take on this role from the start of training. This ensures a well organised game day and allows the coach to concentrate on the team.
- Please consider the following statement before making any potentially negative comments about a club volunteer. ‘Am I prepared to do what they are doing?’
